We've Got Answers.
Everything you need to know before stepping on the mat.
Absolutely not. Everyone starts somewhere — we welcome complete beginners and experienced martial artists alike. Our classes are designed to ease you in at a comfortable pace with no prior experience needed. Your first trial class is completely free, so you can get a feel for the club before committing.
To book a free trial — simply use the Book Now page on our website. Select the class you would like to book for and follow the steps. If you are booking for a child please enter your child's name in the box provided.
To buy a membership — please use the Buy Now page and select your membership type. If you are buying for a child or teen you will need to add a Child Profile to your Parent Account and use this child's profile to purchase the membership. This allows you to book your child (or multiple children) into their individual classes using the child's account. The membership and class credits belong to the child and not the parent or adult who purchased it. This helps us keep track of children's class attendance.
For your first session, just bring comfortable sports or gym clothing (t-shirt, joggers or shorts are perfect), a bottle of water, and an open mind. You don't need to bring any equipment for your trial — we can lend you what you need. Clean bare feet are standard on our mats.
Please arrive 10 minutes early.
Yes. Safety is our highest priority. Beginners (and experienced students) are always made welcome and well looked after in a safe, supportive environment. You will never feel intimidated or left out.
Our classes focus on technique, body awareness, and controlled movement and you will never be forced to make contact or spar. Sparring and competition classes are held separately from our main group classes.
We offer classes for children, teenagers and adults in Kickboxing, Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ), Judo, Krav Maga, MMA, and Self-defence. Many members train in multiple styles — our timetable makes it easy to cross-train.
For a full breakdown of each class please visit our Styles page on the website.
For adults, most classes run between 60–90 minutes depending on the discipline and type of class. Our kids and teens classes run between 30–60 minutes depending on the age range.
For beginners, we recommend starting with 1–2 sessions per week to build a solid foundation while giving your body time to adapt. Once your fitness, stamina and strength increases there's no upper limit — dedicated members train daily.
Yes. Each discipline has its own grading system. Gradings are held every few months and are optional — you grade when your instructor feels you're ready, not on a fixed schedule. Progress is recognised and celebrated, but we never pressure members to grade before they're confident.
Yes, for those who want it. We have a dedicated competition team and regularly attend regional and national events. Competition is entirely optional — the majority of our members train for fitness, confidence, and enjoyment with no interest in competing, and that's completely fine.
Our children's classes are broken down into specific age groups to allow for focused, age-related training:
- 4–6 years
- 7–11 years
- 12–14 years
- Adults: 15 years and over
Children's classes are strictly non-contact in the early stages. Our advanced children's classes allow for light-touch contact if the child is ready. Full protective equipment is always worn.
When it comes to safeguarding — all instructors hold enhanced DBS checks.
Beyond physical fitness, children develop confidence, self-belief, respect for others, discipline, focus, resilience, anti-bullying awareness, and friendships in a supportive team environment.
You're always welcome and encouraged to stay for your child's session if space allows in the dojo.
Please note — once the class starts, parents are not allowed to interrupt or coach their child from the side. This causes an unnecessary distraction and parents will be asked to leave the dojo if this happens.
We have a number of flexible options which you can view on our Buy Now page. Please first select the dojo you would like to attend from the drop-down menu and the prices will appear.
We're not a gym so there are no joining fees. Once you become a member you will need to purchase our Meiji Martial Arts uniform and protective equipment to match the martial art of your choice. One of our friendly staff members will assist you with what you need.
We have a variety of membership types from blocks of classes to monthly memberships.
Due to limited space in our classes we are unable to offer discounted membership fees. However, a 20% family and sibling discount will be applied to all uniform and equipment purchases at the dojo.
Nothing for your first class or trial month — just wear comfortable clothing and we'll lend you anything you need. Once settled in, your instructor will advise on what's needed for your chosen discipline. We have club-branded kit available at every dojo.
Not to begin with. We recommend waiting until your child has attended a few sessions and decided they enjoy it before investing in kit. One of our staff members will guide you on exactly what's needed for your child's chosen discipline when the time comes.
Absolutely. Our dojos are hoovered and cleaned with antibacterial solution on a daily basis. Changing rooms, showers, and toilet facilities are available.
