A simple workout and stretching guide to release anxiety, promote fluid mobility and improve posture.

A Meiji Sensei practicing

You may wonder how our instructors manage to stay in such incredible shape, displaying agility, speed, power and fluidity in their movement. As well as gruelling, high-intensity training through blood, sweat and the odd tear, they rely on a few, very simple and fundamental stretching techniques to ensure that they keep mind and body in immaculate condition.

Incorporating flexibility into your workout routine has a wide range of effects on your body, including improved mobility, posture and muscle coordination, It also helps reduce risk of injury, while easing muscle soreness after an intense workout or perhaps the aches and pains of a casual day.

It will come as no surprise that anxiety levels have spiked since coronavirus hit the world. Meiji Martial Arts’s partner stretching exercises are a great way to alleviate tension. Like yoga and meditation, they relax the mind and body, while improving breathing control and maintaining flexibility. And in line with the principles of meditation, try and live in the moment, the now, when you’re exercising. Clear your mind of all thought, especially of the past or the future, and focus everything on the exercise itself and on your breathing. You’ll find, by the way, that this is a good discipline to apply to other tasks as well, such as baking or reading or any physical activity – single focus on the task itself and on your breathing.
